Cornell Tech Unveils “Defending Density” Course
Cornell Tech has launched classes in its “Defending Density: Is This the Death of the City?” course. Michael Samuelian, named director of the Roosevelt Island-based college’s Urban Tech Hub this past spring, told Crain’s New York Business he devised the course as a way to launch the hub.
In so doing, he used the debate currently being waged online and in newspapers as a springboard for studying how technology can address the challenges, reported Crain’s. Samuelian, a native New Yorker who guided the redevelopment of Hudson Yards and Governors Island, said density has been unfairly pegged as the culprit in the city becoming an epicenter of COVID-19 in March.
“Overcrowding is the problem,” Samuelian told Crain’s. “Poverty is the problem. Racism is the problem. Not density.”
Samuelian said, “We can look for solutions to help communities think about technology as a tool for economic development.”
