Coppola’s Columbus Tower Boutique Hotel Wins San Francisco Approval
The San Francisco Planning Commission unanimous approved Francis Ford Coppola’s plan to convert five floors of the landmark Columbus Tower into boutique hotel rooms. The well-known film director has owned the North Beach neighborhood property at 916 Kearny St. since 1972.
Plans call for converting 5,743 square feet of existing office space on floors three through seven into 15 hotel rooms. The eight-floor mixed use property is also known as the Sentinel Building. The second-floor Café Zoetrope will be reduced in size to accommodate a hotel lobby but will remain open for business. A private residence occupies the top floor.
The hotel will carry Coppola’s “Hideaways” Collection brand, which includes six hotels including properties in Belize, Guatemala, Italy and Argentina. The San Francisco hotel is anticipated to open by January 2022.
