Copart Inc., a global online vehicle auction company, is now the proud owner of a 36-acre tire disposal site at 11150 Applewhite Rd. on San Antonio’s south side. Copart, which operates an auction location adjacent to the site, plans to clear it of tires and expand its vehicle storage and auction operations there.

Safe Tire Disposal Corp. had moved to the location in 1992 as a tire recycler. The business failed, however, leaving behind millions of used tires. Eclipse Renewables bought the site in 2009, but didn’t have a permit to store scrap tires.

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality conducted an investigation in 2014, following complaints from area residents concerning mosquitos coming from the site. The state investigation confirmed the complaints, as well as a violation of other TCEQ rules.
