Conversion Starts on Former UMass Lowell Campus
Trammell Crow Residential has initiated construction on Alexan Chelmsford, a 340-unit housing development situated on the former UMass Lowell west campus at 255 Princeton St. in the town of Chelmsford, MA., Boston Business Journal reported.
Scheduled for completion in the fourth quarter of 2025, the project will feature studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom units, including townhouse units with garages. Offering amenities including a pool, outdoor courtyards, fitness facility, and resident clubhouse, the development will encompass nearly seven acres of protected wetland. The site’s history dates back to its tenure as the Middlesex County Truancy School before being acquired by UMass Lowell in 1984.
Trammell Crow Residential is concurrently developing two other residential properties under the Alexan brand in Waltham and Peabody. Meanwhile, UMass Lowell is exploring further development opportunities near its east campus, potentially involving student housing and research facilities in collaboration with Pennsylvania developer GMH Communities.
