Convention Center Size Could Stymie Tax Rebates

The city of El Paso, TX announced it would be putting together a multimillion-dollar incentive package to encourage development of a Great Wolf resort, convention center and hotel at Interstate 10 and Paseo del Norte. However, the convention center’s size — 12,000 square feet — could be a problem for attracting $40 million in state hotel and tax rebates.

While the El Paso City Council approved tax breaks and a land swap for the development, the center is too small to qualify for the state’s convention center and hotel tax rebate program, according to William Hamner with the Texas Comptroller’s office in Austin.

If the $150 million development doesn’t receive the rebates, the money would come from the city’s economic impact fund, funded by El Paso Electric’s city franchise fee. However, Economic and International Development Department’s Jessica Herrera said she is confident the project will qualify for the rebates.
