Controversial California Housing Bill Moves Forward Following Compromise
The controversial SB 50 bill was passed by California’s Senate Governance and Finance Committee this week. The legislation would override local zoning rules and allow taller, denser residential buildings near transit hubs. The bill also includes exceptions for smaller cities and counties.
The legislation introduced by Sen. Scott Wiener, D-San Francisco, is aimed at easing California’s housing crunch. Transit-oriented developments would be favored, especially in “job-rich” communities. California’s 15 largest counties would be subject to more stringent rules.
After the hearing and vote, Wiener said, “The legislative process for SB 50 is far from over, but today is a big win for the legislation and for Californians, so many of whom need housing.”
The Senate Appropriations Committee will review the bill next. It still needs both legislative chambers and the governor’s approval before becoming law.
