Construction Underway on 129K-SF Gilmer High School

The Gilmer Independent School District began construction on the new Gilmer High School, a 129,000-square-foot building at the site of the existing school at 850 Buffalo. Demolition of the old high school building will begin in June 2020, and be completed a month after the new high school is scheduled to open in time for the 2020-2021 school year.

The original high school opened in 1948, and underwent many renovations over the years. A $33.3-million bond package, which passed in May 2018, is paying for construction of the new school, as well as for construction of a 22,000-square-foot career and technology center.

The groundbreaking represents the conclusion of a decades-long effort to pass the bond, which had been put to the voters seven times since the late 1970s.
