The Lightfoot administration's agreement with the Illinois Tollway transfers 202 acres of land near O'Hare Airport

Construction Begins on O’Hare 21 Expansion

Construction has begun on the first in a series of O’Hare 21 expansion projects at O’Hare International Airport. City officials broke ground on the first phase of a $1.2-billion expansion of the airport’s Terminal 5, which will increase its total building area by 350,000 square feet.

“The expansion of Terminal 5 is a win-win for Chicago residents, businesses, and travelers the world over,” said Matt O’Shea, chairman of the City Council’s aviation committee and 19th Ward Alderman. “With more gates and more amenities to serve customers, today’s investments to expand and modernize Terminal 5 will generate a better and more connected O’Hare tomorrow.”

The expansion will mean that Delta Air Lines will relocate its operations into Terminal 5 from its existing facility at Terminal 2. Conversely, United Airlines and American Airlines will relocate their Terminal 5 operations into O’Hare’s new Global Terminal, which is expected to be completed in 2028.
