Construction Begins on Intelligence Center

Work has begun on an intelligence center in McAllen, TX that will house state, federal and local law enforcement officials. The goal of the facility, which is in the site of the former McAllen police station, is to place different agencies with a location where information can be shared in real time.

The center resulted from House Bill 11, which passed two years ago, and required coordination of local law enforcement officials and politicians. The bill appropriated $2.4 million to the center, and $2.5 million to Texas Anti-Gang (TAG), a new program that will support regional efforts to combat gang violence through prevention and intervention.

“We talk a lot about post 9-11 — connect the dots — so forth and so on,” Texas Department of Public Director Steve McCraw told the Edinburg Monitor. “Well, you can’t connect what you can’t collect, and people don’t realize that in Texas we have more than 1,574 different law enforcement agencies.”
