Construction Begins on Abilene’s First Aldi Store

Grocery company Aldi is coming to Abilene, TX, courtesy of space that once held a Kohl’s. Specifically, renovation is underway on the east side of a shopping center at 4765 Southwest Dr., a former Kohl’s entrance. The Kohl’s will remain (taking less space), with the Aldi taking 26,926 square feet of the approximately 96,000-square-foot building. The estimated renovation cost is $1.4 million.

The current closest Aldi to Abilene is more than 70 miles away, in Brownwood, TX.

According to Aldi, the store is anticipated to open by late summer, 2020. The company, which opened in 1976, operates more than 1,900 stores in 36 states. Scott Huska with Aldi told the Abilene Reporter News that the smaller stores have only four or five aisles, making them “simpler and easier to navigate than traditional supermarkets.”
