Congrats, Pecos, TX: You Are the Top Micropolitan Area

The Walton Family Foundation released its Most Dynamic Micropolitan Index, which ranks 531 small towns — known as micropolitan statistical areas — based on social and economic factors. The top small town in this category was West Texas’ Pecos, TX. According to the report, Pecos, the county seat of Reeves County, took top honors because of its location in the Permian Basin, placing it at “the epicenter of the shale oil exploration boom,” the foundation said.

Other Texas small towns also made the top 20, including Fredericksburg (10th place) and Ulvade (No. 11). As Pecos was in first place on the Walton Family Foundation’s list, another Texas micropolitan area — Zapata, TX — sat dead last on the same list.

The foundation identifies micropolitan statistical areas as those comprising one or more counties, and containing at least one city with more than 10,000 but less than 50,000 in population.
