Companies’ Supply Chains are Saving the Sea

Did you know that an estimated eight million metric tons of plastic make its way into the ocean annually? That amounts to a garbage-truck load a minute. Many companies are reevaluating their supply chain logistics and design practices to help alleviate this gigantic load of pollution.

Since 2017, computer electronics company HP has worked with people in Haiti to use the plastic found on the streets to manufacture printer ink cartridges. In this time, they have prevented about 12 million plastic bottles from entering the Caribbean Sea. Other companies are vowing to limit their plastic usage, too. For example, Ikea promises to phase out single-use plastic products by 2020.

By joining the NextWave Plastics coalition, HP is going to share its knowledge with other companies on how to produce sustainable products that reuse, reduce and recycle plastic. HP’s Global Head of Sustainability Strategy and Innovation Ellen Jackowski says, “Everybody needs to step up [to solve the problem of ocean plastic], including business, and I see no reason why business shouldn’t be leading.”
