Community Garden Fights to Stay in Harlem
Community gardeners may be forced from two lots in Manhattan’s Harlem neighborhood that they have cared for for 30 years.
The Joseph Daniel Wilson Memorial Garden sits on four lots on the north side of 122nd St. between Seventh and Eighth Avenues, with two of the lots owned by Alix Saget of Queens, and the other two owned by the city.
Saget plans to sell the non-contiguous lots individually. To preserve the community garden, Manhattan Borough President Gail Brewer offered to pay Saget $300,000 for the lots from her office’s capital funds, but Saget believes they are worth much more.
