Commonwealth Fusion to Develop Energy Center in Devens

Nuclear fusion startup Commonwealth Fusion Systems has agreed to buy a 47-acre site in the life sciences cluster of Devens, MASS. The firm plans to sell 11 acres of the site at 111 Hospital Road to King Street Properties, which will construct a manufacturing hub to develop nuclear fusion technology.

Construction on the new 165,000-square-foot manufacturing facility would begin later this year, followed by a 150,000-square-foot research facility, which would be owned by Commonwealth Fusion. Commonwealth Fusion is a private offshoot from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Plasma Science and Fusion Center and is working toward commercializing energy harnessed from nuclear fusion. King Street Properties is building the first of a five-building, 45-acre biomanufacturing campus nearby.

“This will be the site where we harness fusion and prove it can work as a clean, limitless power source for the first time in history,” said Bob Mumgaard CEO at Commonwealth Fusion.
