Commerce Department: U.S. Retail Sales Rose 18% in May

Retail sales rose 17.7% in May, rising dramatically from April’s rock-bottom levels, according to the U.S. Commerce Department’s advance monthly sales for retail and food services report released June 16.

May is the first month that has shown positive month-over-month growth since the COVID-19 pandemic halted the U.S. economy. In April, retail sales were down 14.7% from March, and March dropped nearly 10% from February.

Advance estimates of U.S retail and food services sales for May 2020 was $485.5 billion, an increase of 17.7% from April but still 6.1% below May of 2019.
