Coming to San Antonio: “Smart” Streetlights

The city of San Antonio and CPS Energy, the city-owned utility, are teaming up to introduce “smart” streetlights to San Antonio. Once installed, the lights will illuminate city streets, as well as sense flooding patterns, measure air quality, check temperatures and seek out available parking spots.

The partners indicated that they will solicit bids from three venders late this month to test the technology in the area’s three innovation zones: Brooks, downtown San Antonio, and South Texas Medical Center. The contractors will test equipment for about three months before the city evaluates the technology’s effectiveness. Based on that review, the city will issue another call for bids on a citywide smart streetlight project.

After the three contractors are selected for the pilot program, sensors will be attached to current infrastructure as early as fall 2019.
