Coming to Austin: The First Manufacturing-Focused 5G Zone
AT&T and Samsung teamed up to create the first manufacturing-focused 5G “Innovation Zone” in the U.S. The zone, which is being put in place to test fifth-generation wireless broadband technology, will be on Samsung’s 160-acre campus in north Austin.
The two companies indicated they will test location services to improve safety, industrial “Internet of Things” (IoT) sensors that monitor environmental and equipment conditions, and more. “This is a first. We’ll be testing the real-world impact 5G will have on the manufacturing industry,” AT&T’s Mo Katibeh said. Jonathan Taylor with Samsung told the Austin American Statesman that the location was selected because of Austin’s strong semiconductor manufacturing industry.
AT&T recently opened a 5G testing lab in North Austin, one of several the company operates throughout the country. It anticipates deploying its commercial mobile 5G network in parts of dozens of cities by the end of 2018.
