Coastal Commission Asserts Right to Vote on Waterfront Restaurant
The California Coastal Commission voted 9-1 to allow the body to weigh in on restaurant uses, though an unusual process unfolded in determining jurisdiction on a proposed San Diego waterfront restaurant. The vote cleared the way for the commission to rule on the $13-million Portside Pier replacement for Anthony’s Seafood Grotto.
Brigantine Restaurants is seeking to redevelop the now-closed, 25,000-square-foot property into a new 37,225-square-foot facility featuring a trio of restaurants, Brigantine on the Bay, Miguel’s Cocina and Ketch Grill & Taps, with seating for 1,000 diners.
The property at 1360 N. Harbor Dr. is slated to be turned over to the port next week. Brigantine planned to initiate construction this year, but needs approvals from federal and state agencies. The wrangling, including a pending appeal vote, has put a mid-2018 planned opening date in jeopardy.
