City’s Board of Standards Approves Controversial UWS Tower
The New York City Board of Standards and Appeals has ruled that 200 Amsterdam Ave., the controversial 668-foot residential tower being developed by SJP Properties and Mitsui Fudosan, does not violate zoning rules. The Upper West Side tower had been contested by local activists, who last year succeeded in bringing construction to a halt as the Department of Buildings ordered a review.
Earlier this year, activist group the Committee for Environmentally Sound Development, said the developers followed a 1978 memo that misconstrued how air rights for taller buildings can be assembled. The BSA considered the challenge at a March meeting, and issued its ruling on Tuesday.
In a statement, the developers said that through the DOB audit and BSA review, “we have consistently demonstrated that 200 Amsterdam was meticulously designed in strict accordance to the NYC zoning code.” They called the board’s decision “further validation that this building fully conforms with all requirements.”
