City Weighs Expanding Interborough Ferry Service
New York City Economic Development Corporation said it’s studying the feasibility of adding service on the NYC Ferry system, which connects Queens, Brooklyn and the Bronx to Manhattan. The study comes as the 16-month-old ferry service recently launched its sixth route, and has achieved on-time performance of nearly 92%.
“NYC Ferry’s success in just two years has been extraordinary,” said NYCEDC president James Patchett. “We’re slashing commuting times, connecting residents to major job centers, and reuniting New Yorkers with their waterfront and helping them discover other neighborhoods. We look forward to exploring ways to bring ferry service to more communities.”
The 2018 ferry feasibility study will examine sites for consideration as future landings, or routes that could complement the existing system. The first stage will include briefings with elected officials and community board representatives. The second stage will weigh practical considerations, such as water depths and travel time comparisons.
