City Seeks Public Input Ahead of SoHo/NoHo Rezoning

The Department of City Planning (DCP) has set Feb. 6 for the first in a series of public sessions ahead of possible rezoning of SoHo and NoHo, both technically still zoned as manufacturing districts. DCP will seek public input, in partnership with Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer and Council Member Margaret Chin.

“The SoHo/NoHo area has a rich, vibrant history, but we need to fix its zoning to lay the foundation for its future,” said Brewer. “As the old rules have stopped working, the area has seen a steady march of special exemptions, one-off variances and inappropriately large retail uses. SoHo and NoHo need room for creativity, artists, artisans, workshops and tech.”

At present, the two neighborhoods are home to about 8,000 New Yorkers, an unusually large residential presence for manufacturing districts, according to DCP. A quarter of their jobs are in creative industries, and SoHo’s retail sector ranks second citywide.
