City Officials Break Ground on Garfield Gateway Project
Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Chicago Transit Authority President Dorval R. Carter Jr. broke ground Friday on the $50-million Garfield Gateway project, to make major improvement to the Garfield Green Line station. The station serves 425,000 “L” riders per year.
The Garfield Gateway project is part of a larger neighborhood revitalization effort by community groups, property owners and the University of Chicago along Garfield Boulevard in the city’s Washington Park neighborhood. It also complements $174 million in state funding toward transportation infrastructure needs related to the Obama Center.
“The Obama Presidential Center will be a transformational project for Chicago’s south side, and this state funding demonstrates Illinois’ commitment to honoring the legacy of Chicago’s favorite son and daughter,” said Emanuel. “Today we are doubling down on that investment, and turning an iconic station from an eyesore into a community asset that reflects Washington Park’s future.”
