City of Seattle Seeks to Redevelop Memorial Stadium
The 76-year-old Memorial Stadium at the Seattle Center may get a new lease on life, as the City of Seattle and Seattle Public Schools are seeking proposals from developers to replace the aging facility with a new “state-of-the-art multi-purpose sports, educational and entertainment stadium”. The Daily Journal of Commerce reports the project will cost upwards of $100 million.
The stadium, which is owned by Seattle Public Schools, is currently used for graduation ceremonies and high school athletics. The developer selected would replace the current grandstand, upgrade the water distribution system, add new LED lights and replace the synthetic turf. The facility would also be more open to the Seattle Center campus and better integrated with its arts and cultural life.
Memorial Stadium was designed by George W. Stoddard and is dedicated to the memory of Seattle youth who gave their lives in World War II. A memorial at the stadium’s east end that is inscribed with over 700 names of those soldiers will be maintained and restored. The winning bid for the project is expected to be announced on May 22.
