City of Chicago to Rent Out Hotel Rooms for COVID-19 Patients

With a view toward easing the strain on hospitals, as well as helping to slow the spread of the coronavirus, the city of Chicago is renting downtown hotel rooms for use by people who have either been diagnosed or are awaiting test results. The agreements are expected to make more than 2,000 hotel rooms available by the end of the week.

First to open its rooms to COVID-19 patients will be Fillmore Capital Partners’ Hotel One-Sixty-Six. “We are honored to help the City of Chicago provide safe accommodations for its residents,” said Fillmore president Ronald E. Silva.

On the state level, “we’ve already identified over 12,000 rooms” as more hotel operators volunteer, Michael Jacobson, CEO and president of the Illinois Hotel & Lodging Association, told the Chicago Tribune.

The arrangement won’t be a moneymaker for participating hotels, but could “at least help them weather the storm,” Jacobson added.
