City Life Problems? Here Are Solutions
Cities attract people because of their amenities, walkability, life/work/play environments and quality of life. But, with all the good comes some serious issues, like pollution, street fights, vandalism, and the like.
Global cities are trying different ideas to solve these problems. Here’s a look at what a few have done so far:
- Scents & Street Fighters: In the city of Eindhoven, Netherlands, they’ve added aromatherapy scents of citrus around town because it’s said to create calm effects. An experiment proved that it was used to calm prisoners at police stations.
- Underground Trash Collection: Cascais, Portugal is using technology to keep streets free of trash. With underground receptacles, the system calls for truck dispatches when the underground containers become full.
- Limiting Pollution: As the most congested city in the world, 20,000 people die annually in Mexico City because of pollution. The city bought 90 low-emission double decker buses, which replace 9,720 cars.
