Chicago City Hall Mayor Lori Lightfoot 2022 budget

City Council Puts Implosion Demolitions on Hold

The Chicago City Council approved an ordinance introduced by Mayor Lori Lightfoot and the Department of Buildings to establish a new regulatory framework for implosion demolitions in Chicago. The ordinance extends the temporary moratorium on the use of explosives in the demolition of buildings or other structures until city departments create their own specific rules for an implosion permitting process.

To ensure community members are a part of this process, residents will have an opportunity to provide input and recommendations on each department’s proposed rules during a minimum 60-day public comment period.

“Because of this ordinance, going forward, an applicant wishing to use explosives in a demolition must adhere to the strictest and most up-to-date rules and regulations,” said Lightfoot. “Moreover, the community will be notified and wholly engaged before any approval is considered.”

The mayor imposed a six-month moratorium on demolitions this past April.
