City Council Proposes Replacing BQE with a Tunnel
Ahead of a City Council transportation committee hearing Tuesday, the New York City Council released a report from engineering firm Arup on the possibilities for repairing or replacing the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (BQE). The Council favors replacing the current roadway with a capped highway or tunnel.
The capped highway plan entails a street-level roadway that has a deck built over it that would support an expansion of Brooklyn Bridge Park. The cost is estimated at around $3.2 billion.
“The tunnel bypass would cost more but would be a more transformative project, allowing for the removal of the expressway through Cobble Hill, Brooklyn Heights, Dumbo, Fort Greene and Clinton Hill,” according to a statement from City Council. “This stretch of the BQE would no longer be needed, providing significant room for re-imagination, and could include dedicated transit and bicycle lanes, new parks, and other public facilities.”
Connect New York 2020 is set to take place on Tuesday, April 29 at Upper Story by Charlie Palmer. For more information, or to register, click here.
