City Completes 1.25-Mile Riverwalk Promenade

City officials marked the opening of the revamped Chicago Riverwalk East from Michigan Avenue to Lake Shore Drive, completing the 1.25-mile Riverwalk through downtown. With the completion of the $12-million investment, each block of the 1.25-mile promenade along the Chicago River has been modernized or newly developed.

“Chicago is reconnecting with the river in a way that improves our quality of life, protects our environment and enhances economic development that is sustainable for future generations,” said Mayor Rahm Emanuel. “The completion of Riverwalk East is a major milestone in that journey.”

The new Riverwalk East space includes 10,000 square feet of “play” space; 94 new LED dark-sky compliant light fixtures; three public restrooms; approximately 150 new tree plantings; and more public seating, increasing the public seating capacity by over 500 along the Riverwalk. A public art installation consisting of 117-foot stainless steel towers, known as Weather Station, is due for completion in fall 2020.
