City Blesses SDSU Mission Valley Stadium Site Sale

San Diego State University received an approval from the San Diego City Council on its $88-million acquisition of 135 acres of Mission Valley land. The university plans to break ground next month on a 35,000-seat football stadium that is slated to deliver in time for the 2022 college football season. A 34-acre river park is also included in the initial development phase.

San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer and SDSU President Adela de la Torre praised the 8-1 council vote, saying it will bring a “new era for both the City of San Diego and its oldest university.”

They added, “SDSU Mission Valley will create an academic and research hub helping generations of San Diegans achieve their personal, educational, and professional goals.”

SDSU’s overall $3.5-billion development plan spans 10 to 15 years and encompasses 86 acres of parks, recreation, and open space; 1.6 million square feet of office and research space; construction of a multi-use stadium and corresponding demolition of an existing football facility; 4,600 housing units; a 400-room hotel; and 95,000 square feet of campus retail.
