City, Amtrak Release Sunnyside Master Plan

The de Blasio Administration and Amtrak released the Sunnyside Yard Master Plan for development over the railroad’s Western Queens storage yards. Among other things it would give rise to 12,000 affordable apartments, or more than the sprawling Peter Cooper Village-Stuyvesant Town complex in Manhattan.

Development on the publicly-controlled site would also provide 60 acres of new open space, and the construction of a new Sunnyside Station serving regional and intercity rail lines. The development site would be created by decking over Amtrak’s Sunnyside Yard.

“Sunnyside Yard presents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to plan for improved public transit, more housing, open space, and jobs to support a stronger, more equitable New York City,” said James Patchett, New York City Economic Development Corporation president and CEO.

The city and Amtrak began the master planning process on Sunnyside Yard development in summer 2018, receiving extensive community input.
