Churches to Build on Underutilized Land

Five faith-based institutions are the first nonprofits to join a program to develop underutilized land — including the Shiloh Church of Christ, founded in Harlem in 1932.

“We have had this land for 40 years, but don’t have the expertise to develop this without a partner,” said Dr. Sheila Gillams, elder of the Shiloh Church.

The New York Land Opportunity Program will provide free assistance to help the five groups identify and select experienced developers as joint venture partners to develop affordable housing and new community space, while the churches maintain their existing programs and worship spaces.

“Working with New York City’s community-based organizations, and particularly faith-based leaders, we are finding new ways to turn underutilized lots into modern affordable housing and community spaces,” says New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio.
