Chip Supplier Commits to New Peoria Factory Site

Amkor Technology was getting heat from residents near its proposed semiconductor chip packaging and testing facility in Peoria, so the town went out and bought them a new site. The Phoenix Business Journal reports the company will now relocate the plant on a parcel the town picked up following an Arizona State Land auction just miles away from the contentious site.

The town paid $46.7 million for 834 acres of state trust land near Loop 303 and Lake Pleasant Parkway. The city expects to receive up to $500 million in reimbursements from subsequent land sales.

Within hours of the sale, the town closed the deal with Amkor. Amkor says it wants to begin work on the plant right away.

Amkor’s planned facility is expected to be the largest outsourced packaging plant in the U.S. It will package and test millions of chips from the nearby Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. plant in north Phoenix. The plant is expected to create 2,000 new jobs and boost economic development in West Valley City and neighboring areas.
