Chicago’s O’Hare $8.5B Expansion Plans Detailed
Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport is set to undergo a major $8.5-billion expansion, which will bring the first major improvements to terminals in 25 years. An ordinance introduced to the City Council explains more details leading up to an expected vote next month.
Perhaps the biggest change is a power shift from airlines, who have had exclusive use of gates. If the agreement is approved, the city will be able to allocate gates based on flying… and United and American, the biggest airlines, won’t be able to veto the city or each other’s moves.
Among the improvements proposed in the $6.1-billion initial phase of construction include:
– $1.6 billion for a new Terminal 2
– $691 million in baggage-handling infrastructure
– Two satellite concourses costing $1 billion, and housing the majority of new gate additions
– More than $1 billion in overdue construction work, ranging from runway improvements to repairs and renovations at existing terminals
