Chicago’s New Mayor Has Business Wary of Change

Chicago will have a new mayor in late May. The city’s business community is watching to see how great a departure Lori Lightfoot’s policies will represent from Rahm Emanuel’s pro-business, pro-development stance.

“We’ve been the top city for six years now for these corporate relocations,” Howard Tullman, formerly CEO of tech hub 1871, told the Chicago Tribune. “The thought that all of that momentum would slow down or not be a priority is pretty scary in terms of my sectors — business and technology.”

Lightfoot has published an economic plan that emphasizes small business development citywide. She has criticized Emanuel’s CBD-centric policies as “a false choice” between Chicago’s downtown and its neighborhoods.

The University of Chicago’s Allen Sanderson expressed some reservations about Lightfoot’s focus on small business. “There’s nothing inherently good or bad about big or small business,” Sanderson told the Tribune. “It’s about which one can produce better results.”
