Chicago’s 760-Acre North Branch Development Plan Unveiled

Connect Industrial is coming to Chicago, June 28th. Here’s where to get more details and register.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the Dept. of Planning and Development unveiled its final plan for redevelopment of a 3.7-mile stretch along the Chicago River between Kinzie Street and Fullerton Avenue. The city envisions revitalizing the 760-acre area into a mixed-use employment center with office buildings, apartment towers and hotels, while creating new resources for industrial development across the city.

The proposed North Branch Industrial Corridor Framework zoning and land use changes are intended to revitalize large vacant parcels, replace obsolete buildings and infrastructure, and update land use regulations that inhibit redevelopment.

City leaders envision a 20-year implementation. Ultimately, it could result in the local employment base tripling, creation of tens of thousands of construction jobs, addition of several thousand new residents, and generation of hundreds of millions of dollars in economic activity.

The final plan is expected to be approved on May 18 by the Chicago Plan Commission.
