Chicago Unemployment Declines 50 Points Y-O-Y

The Chicago region’s unemployment rate declined 50 basis points in the year that ended March 31, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data issued last week. The rate of decline followed the national trend, with the region ending March at 4.3%, compared with 4.1% nationally.

DuPage County posted the metro area’s lowest unemployment rate at 3.4%, followed by Wisconsin’s Kenosha County with 3.6%. At the other end of the spectrum, Lake County in Indiana posted the highest jobless rate at 5.1%, as well as the smallest year-over-year decline.

For the past two years, Chicago-area job growth has trailed the national average, according to BLS. By occupation, the largest share of the region’s 4.65 million workers was represented by people in the trade, transportation and utilities segment, with about 941,500 employees.

The fastest-growing occupational segment, albeit the smallest by number of workers, was mining with a 7.1% growth rate Y-O-Y.
