Chicago Tops List of Green Office Markets in U.S.

For the second consecutive year, Chicago was named the nation’s greenest city in the annual U.S. Green Building Adoption Index by CBRE and Maastricht University. Nearly 70% of the city’s office space is certified by the EPA’s Energy Star program, the U.S. Green Building Council, or both.

On top of maintaining its ranking, Chicago is also getting greener. The city’s 69.8% share of green-certified square footage is nearly six percentage points ahead of second-place San Francisco, the largest spread ever recorded in the CBRE/Maastricht index. The nation’s largest office market, Manhattan comes in seventh with 46% of office space certified.

“Green building certifications have become an important proxy for sustainable practices, recognized by all stakeholders,” said CBRE SVP David Pogue. “Any significant change to one of these major certification programs can have a significant impact on the buildings affected. We will be closely watching for the results.”
