Post Office Re-Development Taken Over by City

Years after developer Bill Davies acquired the Old Main Post office in Chicago with plans for redevelopment, the city of Chicago is moving in to acquire and redevelop the 95-year-old building. The property at 433 W. Van Buren St. has been vacant since 1996. Davies acquired the property in 2009.

Davies, a British national currently residing in Monaco, had plans to market the building for “micro” apartments. However, the city claims that the 2.5-million-square-foot post office and annex buildings are deteriorating, and have been cited for 20 building code violations since 2012, including deteriorated building conditions, issues with fire prevention, electrical, mechanical and exhaust stems, and improper security standards.
