Chicago Risks Lagging Other Cities for Job Growth

Chicago could lag other major cities in employment growth and risk substantial job displacement over the next decade if it doesn’t boost its profile in the tech industry and train workers, the Chicago Tribune reported, citing a study from McKinsey Global Institute.

At present, Chicago is in line for 6% net job growth through 2030. Over the same time period, net job growth is projected at 30% in Austin, 24% in Orlando and 22% in Dallas.

Chicago risks losing 1.2 million jobs, displacing 23% of its workers, in line with national estimates, according to the McKinsey study. Compared with other large cities, Chicago has a higher share of white-collar office support jobs, manufacturing positions and food service jobs.

“There’s a higher share of workers in Chicago that are in jobs that could be automated over the next decade,” McKinsey’s Susan Lund, co-author of the study, told the Tribune.

Connect Chicago Fall 2019 will take place Oct. 29 in Chicago. For more information, or to register, click here.
