Chicago Restaurants Cleared to Reopen
Chicago and suburban Cook County moved into Tier 1 of the state’s COVID-19 mitigation restrictions, the Illinois Department of Public Health announced Saturday. That means bars and restaurants may resume indoor dining with limited capacity, and retail stores may admit more shoppers at a time.
For Chicago’s hard-pressed restaurant industry, the announcement was seen as “a cautious victory” by the Chicago Restaurants Coalition, a group formed last September by the Fulton Market Association. CRC plans to hold a virtual press conference on Jan. 26 to discuss how restaurants and City Hall can collaborate to avoid future shutdowns.
“Foremost and always, CRC wants maximum public safety,” CRC said. “Restaurants should never let their guards down and strictly continue to follow the COVID-19 safety guidelines.”
If the city’s COVID positivity rate exceeds 8% in the future, CRC opposes another indoor dining shutdown “unless government contact-tracing data is pinpointed to specific restaurants.”
