Chicago Region’s Airports Get Boost from Freight Shipments
Even as coronavirus fears empty out passenger terminals and lead to curtailed airline service, rising freight shipments driven by double-digit growth in e-commerce are keeping local airports busy, Crain’s Chicago Business reported. The increase positions the region to capitalize on long-term growth in air freight.
Cargo shipments are booming, especially at airports used by delivery services such as UPS or Amazon. Gary/Chicago International Airport, long snubbed by passenger airlines, landed new cargo service from UPS. Rockford International Airport, among the nation’s busiest cargo airports, is seeing growth in jobs and flights from UPS and Amazon.
“There are only a handful of places with two top-20 cargo airports,” airport consultant Michael Webber told Crain’s. “Chicago is one of them. O’Hare and Rockford coexist really well. [The area] is a rail and trucking hub. There’s a lot of heavy industry, so it’s not just a gateway. It’s a strong origin-and-destination market.”
