Chicago Ranks 3rd for Most Fortune 500 Companies

Chicago ranked third in Fortune’s 2024 edition of the 500 list, with 15 Chicago-area companies in this year’s ranking. It’s the 70th year of the iconic annual list of the largest corporations in the United States, ranked by revenue for the 2023 fiscal year.

Chicago came in just behind Houston, which came in second with 21 companies. New York City took the top spot on the list with 41 companies. Companies on the Fortune 500 list this year are headquartered across more than 225 cities in 37 states.

Chicago-area companies on the list included United Airlines Holdings Inc., McDonald’s Corp, JLL, Mondelez International Inc., and Kraft Heinz Co. Notable moves in rankings include bumps for Northern Trust, Discover Financial Services, and Arthur J. Gallagher.
