Chicago Midway International Airport Starts on $47M Project
Chicago’s Midway International Airport has launched a $47 million project to upgrade its main runway and enhance critical safety systems.
The initiative will repave Runway 13C/31C and its intersecting taxiways, upgrade airfield geometry to meet federal standards, and install new safety features, including runway guard lights and a dedicated emergency access road.
Led by K-Five Construction Corporation, the Chicago Department of Aviation is pursuing more than $37 million in federal support through the 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and the FAA’s Airport Improvement Grant program.
“Midway International Airport is one of the largest employers on the South Side, providing thousands of Chicagoans with quality jobs in a dynamic, ever-changing industry,” said Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson. “As we continue to Build Better Together across this city, this type of critical infrastructure investment is key to furthering economic growth and opportunity, while also providing for an even safer air travel experience for generations of Midway flyers to come.”
