Chicago Metro Population Slips for 3rd Consecutive Year
The population of metropolitan Chicago sustained a net loss for the third consecutive year, according to Census Bureau estimates. The year-over-year shrinkage of about 13,000, or one-tenth of 1%, was concentrated in Cook County, making Chicago the only metro area among the top 10 to see a decline.
Demographers with the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning pointed to a sharp decline in immigration to the Chicago area as one factor. Among native-born residents, the population drop since 2006 has come from those earning less than $75,000 per year. Conversely, the number of metro area residents earning more than $75,000 has grown by 350,000 since 2006.
“Continued population loss is a worrisome trend,” according to a CMAP report. “While the region appears to be gaining high-income residents, this increase is not offsetting losses due to stagnant immigration and domestic outmigration of low- and moderate-income residents.”
