Chicago Hotel Occupancy Off to a Flying Start in 2018

Having already set a new record for tourism in 2017, Chicago may be outdoing itself this year. Hotel demand for the first two months of 2018 was up 12.5% from the year-ago period, driving an overall occupancy increase of 7.3%, according to the Emanuel administration.

The numbers were up for both business and leisure travelers. Driven partly by conventions that weren’t on the local calendar a year ago, room sales associated with group and meetings business were up 32.8% in January and February. Sales of rooms for leisure travel rose 5.9%, compared to the same period in 2017.

“These results underscore the importance and impact of a successful year-round meetings calendar,” said David Whitaker at Choose Chicago. “Attracting more convention delegates and their spending while here in the often-slower shoulder months of January and February helps fuel the overall tourism economy and the jobs supported by it.”
