Chicago Fire Soccer Franchise Breaks Lease, Will Return to Chicago

The Chicago Fire will soon be a Chicago team once again. The Major League Soccer franchise is leaving SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview, IL, and will play once again at Soldier Field beginning next year.

The team has reportedly agreed to pay $60.5 million to the Village of Bridgeview to break its 30-year lease at the 20,000-seat venue. The lease was to have run through 2036.

Village board members unanimously approved a memo of understanding that would release the Fire from the lease and help Bridgeview pay off the sizable debt it has amassed from financing the stadium.

Soldier Field may not be the Fire’s last stop. Earlier this week, outgoing Planning Commissioner David Reifman told the Chicago Sun-Times that there have been discussions about a “long-term idea” to include a soccer stadium on the former Michael Reese Hospital site, which could serve as the future home of the Fire.
