Chicago Developer Plans Adaptive Reuse of Uptown Block
Chicago-based Cedar Street Companies plans to develop 5050 N. Broadway in Chicago’s Uptown. The block-long redevelopment of the former Combined Insurance Company office building is envisioned to encompass more than 700 apartments, including 15% affordable housing units.
The initial 12- to 18-month phase of the project involves adapting the 12- and six-story office buildings as new retail space, and converting space into 342 residential units atop. A new glass facade will be added to the office tower.
Cedar Street’s plan for a subsequent phase includes developing two new seven-story buildings across the street at 5083 and 5063 N. Broadway. At full build-out, the project will also include 45,000 square feet of retail space.
Cedar Street acquired the Broadway property in 2015 for $16 million.
