Charles J. Urstadt Dies at 91; Former Urstadt Biddle Chairman, CEO

Charles J. Urstadt, formerly chairman and CEO of Urstadt Biddle Properties, died Tuesday from complications arising from a recent stroke. Urstadt was 91 years old.

Urstadt joined Urstadt Biddle’s predecessor, Hubbard Real Estate Investments, as a director in 1975. Under his guidance as chairman from 1986 to 2018 and as CEO from 1989 through 2013, Greenwich, CT-based Urstadt Biddle became a leading owner of neighborhood community shopping centers in the suburban New York City region.

He also served as the first chairman of the Battery Park City Authority, and as commissioner of the New York State Division of Housing and Community Renewal. In the latter capacity, he figured prominently in legislation that revamped rent control laws in New York City and state.

In his spare time, Urstadt was an accomplished amateur athlete. In 2008, he set an age-group record for the FINA World Masters Championships swimming competition, which still stands.

Connect New York 2020 is set to take place on Wednesday, April 29 at Upper Story by Charlie Palmer. For more information, or to register, click here.
