Chargers Unveil Latest Vision for Hybrid Stadium
New renderings of the San Diego Chargers proposed downtown stadium, revealed this week, depict a hybrid sports facility and convention center. A $1.8-billion project initiative is expected in the fall if roughly 66,000 signatures are gathered.
Separate entries are designed for the two components, which is envisioned to allow independent use of the facilities. Large entry plazas are designed to let people smoothly and safely move to the facility’s different levels, public park and ground-floor retail space. The stadium event floor is connected to the convention center exhibition floor, which adds column-free space with 200-foot clearances.
The stadium campaign, officially named Citizens for Sports, Entertainment and Tourism, kicked off last week. Kansas City-based Manica is designing the new stadium on land east of Petco Park in East Village.
