Chargers Shift Stadium Plans to Downtown SD, Who Will Pay?

While the San Diego Chargers decided not to join the Los Angeles Rams in Inglewood, they did have plans for a stadium in Mission Valley. Now, the team has reversed field, and released a letter requesting support of a new multi-use stadium in downtown San Diego.

Mayor Kevin Faulconer and Supervisor Ron Roberts released a joint statement responding to the team’s plans. Steve Peace, a spokesman for JMI Realty, who is leading the planning, says the Chargers would pay for the “stadium portion” of the project.

A combined facility will reportedly cost an estimated $400 million less than two separate facilities. The remainder of the project would garner financing from a restructured hotel room tax measure. In any event, a ballot measure that will increase taxes must be approved by two-thirds of the city’s voters.
